IMG_8281 Why….hello there!  Welcome to Brave Bosom!!  First, let’s talk about YOU.  Why are you here?  Are you a Previvor?  Are you a doctor?  A data geek?  Are you someone who has a strong history of cancer in your family…but not sure where to begin?  Are you just curious and randomly stumbling upon this blog?  However you got here….help me help you.  I’d love to know your story…and how I can help you get to where you need to go.

So, here’s a little bit about me.  When I was 25 years old, I discovered that I have up to an 87% lifetime risk of having breast cancer, and up to 60% lifetime risk of ovarian cancer when I tested positive for a BRCA1 deleterious gene mutation.  This mutation was passed from my great grandmother to my grandmother to my mother to me.  My great grandmother and grandmother died because of this mutation, and my mother was diagnosed with Stage 3 Cancer in her early thirties.

For six whole years, I had a plan.  I went in for mammograms and MRI’s every six months.  I told myself that if I did get cancer, at least we would catch it early.  The more I started educating myself about BRCA and genetics, the more I found the need to tell my story to help other women.  I started to learn that we needed to have an honest conversation about body image, genetics, patient empowerment, data sharing, and research funding.  I began finding other Previvors, and together we started to find strength in our shared identity as we face tough choices.  I founded an online community focused around activism, data sharing issues related to BRCA.  Along the way, I have had many adventures.  Here are a few snippets from the press from my journey:

So….that’s why I started Brave Bosom and worked to help my fellow Previvors.  There are so many women out there who are braver than I had to be.  I thought I’d muster the courage to tell my story – and maybe help others in the process.
